Some Basic Facts About Online Marketing

Marketing on the internet involves basic online advertising, so that you can reach out to potential customers.  It takes creativeness in all areas of designing and development as well as technical aspects like marketing and advertising.

Affiliate marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing and interactive promotion are all distinct aspects of online marketing.  Additionally, it consists of product sales, public relations, information management and customer service.

Ever since the birth of the internet, it has been widely used for all types of reasons.  Among these reasons are the advantages of doing business, shopping, etc, from the comfort of your own home.  The Internet has also helped grow e-commerce and online marketing is a big part of e-commerce.

Business-to-business marketing and business-to-consumer marketing are the two business models to which online marketing can be linked.

Business to consumer companies were the first to start when online marketing originated.  These are companies that sell directly to the consumers.

Business to business companies are designed to do business with each other.  An example would be a wholesale company selling to a retail company.

Websites built for online marketing are slightly different than others.  These tend to be peer-to-peer modeled websites that are used to exchange products and services between each other.

Sites like Amazon.com are based on finding the best price model, where customers can search products to find the lowest prices.  Last are online auctions sites, where items are bid for.  Ebay.com is a great example of this model.

Companies that use online marketing have a distinct advantage over offline marketing companies.  They don’t need to devote the same amount of energy, money and time in online marketing as they would in other traditional marketing methods.  With the aid of only a few resources national and international markets can be attained.

Websites and blogs have been developed just for this purpose.  Online marketing is beneficial in the sense that the data is readily available on the Internet.  Customers can recieve newsletters and other information instantly sent to their email in box and if it doesn’t contain the exact information they are seeking, they can continue the search for more information about the product or service online, come to a decision and purchase it online.

One of the few factors that may make an online marketing campaign unsuccessful is building a site with slow loading web pages.  Including complex designs with excessive graphics and animations will slow down the speed even more.  Pages that take a lot of time to download test the patience of the consumer and often dive visitors away from the website.

With modern day broadband speeds this is not as big a problem as it used to be, but remember all those using the internet do not yet have broadband, some customers are still on dialup connections.  This means you should make sure your website is suitable for all unless you want to lose customers who are on dial up connections.

Another minus point of online marketing is that the customers cannot feel, taste, smell or try products in order to make a good decision.  To overcome this, some of the online stores have created liberal return policies along with a strong customer satisfaction guarantee.

Online selling has impacted on all kinds of businesses like banking, advertising, music, etc.  Rather than going to a store and buying Cd’s, music is bought and immediately downloaded online.  Bank transactions like depositing, withdrawing, transferring funds, and paying bills are all performed online.  Billions of dollars are invested every year in online advertising alone.

  1. Richard,
    Good overview.

I agree that site load is very influential on whether visitors to your site will stick around or not. One thing that many don’t realize when building their WordPress site is that the theme itself maybe slow to load to begin with and that too many plugins can really slow the load time down.

There are some good free load time analyzers like gtmetrix.com out there that you can use to test themes or sites. They also tell you where the trouble spots are, but you may need a developer to help if you’re not into code and php.

I also think that retailers online have to make shipping and returns easy. And, offer quality products that they can stand behind with a guarantee.

      Hi Louise

Regarding Plugins If you have some inactive plugins delete them as they still have to load up every time someone visits the site.

If your site is a blog just let the last post appear on the front page as having more posts there also slows down the load time.

      Hi Dee

Some parts of the world, even some rural areas of the UK and the US still have no access to broadband and thus their load time will be very slow to start with.

By having a site that is slow to load you may find that they don’t wait around and so you lose out.

  3. Hello Richard,

The internet has changed the way we do almost anything now. We have a wider variety of merchandise to choose from, we can do our banking online and even though I’m 2,000 miles away from my grand kids I visit with them using video. Communication is so much faster now that we have email or chatting on Skype. It has made our lives so much easier.

      Hi Dennis

If we did not have the internet it would take ages to order a product by snail mail. We would not be able to sell downloadable products and receive instant payments for them.

My ebook covers would take some time for Michael Ottman to design and post the draft to me for approval and then to make any changes I send him back, get the changed cover approved and then finally deliver it to me.

As I live in the UK and Michael is in the US I hate to think how long the whole process would take without the internet.
