Spam Comments and emails.
Welcome to all my readers both new and returning. If you have not already done so why not sign up to my RSS feed for notification of when I post new posts here.
I have writen this post because of all the spam comments I receive here on the blog and also to show how many spam emails I receive weekly.
These comments are automatically blocked by Akismet for the blog and by Google for my email. If you are new to blogging then activate Akismet as it will save you a load of time in identifying spam comments. Occasionally Akismet marks a comment as spam when it shouldn’t but this is a rare occurrence and easily changed.
In the last 12 months I have received 4,400 spam comments and 389 approved comments on the blog. The ratio of spam comments to genuine comments is approximately 11 spam comments to 1 genuine comment. This ratio lat year was about 6 to 1. Unfortunately it is one of the things we have to put up with as there does not seem to be anyway to block these spam comments at source.
This averages out to 85 per week and 12 per day. A lot of these spam comments relate to payday loans, sex sites, health products and other things which have no relationship to not only the post but also to anything on this blog. Needless to say they are deleted regularly. The only advantage I can see to getting these spam comments is that the people leaving them add to the visitor stats for the blog.
From my email address since the 5th May 2012 I have received a total of 32,296 spam emails which is equal to 1,463 per week or 209 per day. I am glad that my spam filters locate these in a separate folder so that I can delete them easily without having to open them first.
Google my email supplier puts all comments it considers as spam into the spam folder and if an autoresponder service is sending a lot of spam messages it places all emails from that autoresponder into the spam folder. Some of these may not be spam but because of the large majority that are the good is classed with the bad.
One autoresponder service, for my email account anyway, that Google puts all emails from into the spam folder is Imnica Mail because a large amount of emails from that autoresponder service meet Google’s spam criteria.
I welcome all comments positive or negative, except spam, and will reply to all that are passed by Akismet.
